If the word “acid” in hyaluronic acid is a bit daunting, we’re here to clear the air. We hear you: high school chemistry class taught us that acids can be potentially damaging — especially when in contact with bare skin. But in the world of beauty, hyaluronic acid is like the Tom Brady (or Meryl Streep, or Christiano Ronaldo, or Mark Zuckerberg) of skincare ingredients — iconic, an industry front runner, and always reliable to do an excellent job.
Here’s why: Hyaluronic acid (HA) — a gel-like, moisture-binding ingredient — helps boost the skin’s hydration, elasticity, and even plumpness. Although HA occurs naturally in our skin, its levels typically decline as we get older, leaving drier, duller skin behind. Because of this, applying HA topically replenishes our skin’s much needed moisture, creating a complexion that often appears more radiant and smoother after use.
Since this ingredient boasts such powerful results, I try to stock my bathroom cabinet with HA-based products. And it’s a pretty easy job as there are countless formulas on the market that are infused with the moisture-loving ingredient. Recently, I discovered one that is particularly amazing: Dr. Barbara Sturm® Hyaluronic Serum ($300).
Before you balk at the price, know that the serum is backed by serious science. Dr. Barbara Sturm developed it to be jam-packed with both long- and short-chain HA molecules. The combination of the two types delivers concentrated moisture. The long-chain molecules provide immediate hydration to the surface layer of the skin, while short-chain molecules penetrate much deeper for longer-lasting moisture. Dr. Sturm also cocktailed the HA with other performance ingredients, including “anti-inflammatory, anti-aging superstar” purslane. This herb is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that work to promote the skin’s natural barrier and rebuild its moisture levels.
Considering that I live in New York City (which is obviously loaded with pollution), and my apartment building fluctuates its heat and air conditioning levels to extremes every day, my skin suffers from intense dryness. After receiving this serum, I began using it every night, curious to know if it would help the parched patches of skin I wake up with nearly every morning. Lo and behold, it did give my skin a major hydration boost, and the results were visible in just a few short days. I’m still using it and my skin has practically never looked better: it doesn’t feel tight with dryness when I first wake up anymore and the texture is the softest it has ever been.
My softer, plumper skin isn’t the only reason I keep this formula on rotation. Call me appearance-obsessed, but the packaging is also chic. The white and black aesthetic begs to be Instagrammed. I keep it prominently displayed on my bathroom countertop. Although, it’s important to note that if you live with a spouse, partner, or roommates (like myself), and leave this serum out, don’t be surprised if it disappears a little more quickly than you’d expect. I can’t blame others for knowing quality skincare when they see it, but you’ve been warned!
