The 1 Skincare Step This Celebrity Facialist Always Skips in the Morning

Tap through Instagram® and you’re bound to come across it: the rose quartz facial roller. It’s one of the most ubiquitous skincare tools on the market right now. We doubtlessly have celebrity facialist Angela Caglia to thank for that. The complexion guru, who counts Minnie Driver and Helena Christensen among her clients, utilizes many rose quartz tools in her practice — including tiny gua sha tools, a whole mask made of the stuff and, yes, a gorgeous rose gold and rose quartz roller.

Though Caglia’s flagship spa is in Bel Air, her history with skincare is rooted in Paris, and her eponymous, botanical-rich brand reflects that influence. Despite the fact that she trained with some of the top French complexion experts before launching her own products, she still keeps one foot grounded in American sensibilities. “French women are all about embracing their wrinkles, while American women will go for injectable wrinkle reducers,” Caglia says. “I think both are great.” It’s that dichotomy that makes her one of the more down-to-earth women in the industry.

Ahead, Caglia breaks down more differences between French versus American beauty, shares her tips for rolling your face, explains why she never washes her face in the morning, and tells us much, much more.

Spotlyte: Tell me a little bit about your work within the beauty industry before you launched your line.

Angela Caglia: It’s been a long road! At 23, I went to Paris to study French through my college. At that time, facials were not really big in America, and I discovered them while I was in Paris. I loved how ritualistic French women were as compared to what I’d seen in America. I grew up in the ‘80s, and women were just throwing a lot of makeup on their skin. I loved how [the French] were so dedicated to facials and looking more natural, and aging in a different way — they were proud of their wrinkles.

When I came back [to the States], I walked by the beautiful training institute for Yon-Ka Paris® — it had just opened. I was in business school at the time, and I needed a part-time job, so I just wandered in and said, “Hire me as your front desk person!” Eventually, I decided to get my aesthetic license, and then I trained at Yon-Ka® Paris. Their philosophy was very botanical-focused. So when it came time to start my line three years ago, I knew that I wanted to go toward that natural route. I love the aromatherapy, and I love the immediate result on the skin.

Spotlyte: Talk to me about the birth of your own brand. What was the motivation? What do you hope men and women get out of your line?

AC: The motivation was that I love what I do so much — giving facials. After doing it for so many years, I’ve found that people don’t really have the time to be consistent, because they’re too busy. I wanted to create products where I could basically give everyone that facial experience. That includes my rose quartz beauty tools along with my products. The whole idea is for me not to have to be there. Someone in Idaho can have an Angela Caglia® facial and not pay $400 for it.

I’m really big on ingredients, and I’ve been asked to sell a lot of products over the years. I began to become educated about what was going into those products. I just knew they were filled with a lot of fillers, colorants, and perfumes, and they weren’t really helping my clients. I always had my client in mind when creating products.

Spotlyte: There’s been a real push in the beauty industry to move toward more skin-friendly ingredients. Do you think we’ll ever get to a point where the consumer is super invested in how healthy the ingredients in their products actually are?

AC: I think it’s going to happen sooner than later. I think consumers aren’t being sold a story of “this is going to make you look 10 years younger” like they were before. Now we just want to take care of the skin. A cream isn’t going to turn back time, so it’s a question of balance and educating ourselves.

Spotlyte: Do you have a favorite product in your line?

AC: That’s like picking a child! But I am coming out with new products that are launching in a few months. One I created is an amazing vitamin C serum that’s stable, and it’s heavenly. It’s a 20 percent stable vitamin C, which means it doesn’t oxidize. I’m really excited about that product launching.

Spotlyte: Aside from new products, what else can we look forward to from your line in the coming year?
AC: New innovation with my rose quartz tools! I’ll be launching something a little more innovative with my roller — keeping it exciting.

Spotlyte: So let’s talk about the rose quartz roller. What is the best way for someone to incorporate a roller into their routine?

AC: The reason I launched it was because it’s easy. You don’t have to charge it. You can use it morning and night. I have some clients who put it by their remote control and, while they’re watching TV, they’ll roll. Some do it in their office to have a zen moment.

Spotlyte: How do you ensure you’re getting the most out of your roller?

AC: In order for a serum to penetrate the skin [with a roller], most people think that you just put your product on and then roll. That’s not going to do anything, because the tool is cold. When you use it cold, all you’re doing is giving yourself a massage. I suggest dipping in hot water for 30 seconds, lift it up, dry it, and then roll the warm stone over your serum or moisturizer. That’s going to help to loosen the pores and help your serum to penetrate further into your skin. It’s like a warm stone massage for your face.

I also recommend using two rollers. I’ve always used two in my treatments, because it feels like two hands. You simultaneously use them on each side, and it just feels amazing.

Spotlyte: What’s the number one piece of advice you wish people would take about their skin?

AC: I’d say go to a dermatologist or a facialist, because people just get so lost — and I don’t blame them! They need someone guiding them. I recommend [someone] that’s touching their skin and looking at it. Also, don’t forget to cleanse your skin at night! Some women go to sleep with their makeup on and it just wreaks havoc the next day.

Spotlyte: Switching gears a bit, can you tell us a bit about your own skincare routine?

AC: At night, I do my cleanse. I’m launching a cleansing oil in a few months, so I’ve been using that lately. I love cleansing oils and balms, because oils can help to remove everything from your skin, versus overstripping with a foaming cleanser.

I’ve been experimenting with giving myself a night facial, which is fun. I’ll cleanse, and then I’ll put my Dream Exfoliant™ mask on. [Once I remove it,] I’ll put my sheet mask on, and I’ll roll it with my warm roller to infuse everything in. Then I’ll put an oil or moisturizer on after and go to bed, and I’ll wake up and my skin just looks gorgeous.

Spotlyte: Do you have a morning routine?

AC: In the morning, I don’t usually use a cleanser, because I don’t want to strip my skin. So I’ll splash warm water on my skin, and use my vitamin C serum, and then put a moisturizer on. I just purchased suntegrity® — I love that SPF — so I’ll finish with that.

Spotlyte: Can you talk to me a little bit about your relationship to medical aesthetic treatments, like lasers?

AC: [CO2 laser resurfacing] is not something I plan to ever do. Some of my clients have had it done and seem to like the results. I don’t think it’s for everyone. I prefer a less invasive approach to the barrier of the skin. I prefer facials, gentle grade peels, microcurrent, LED, and my own natural, clean products.

Spotlyte: What about injectables?

AC: I get injectable wrinkle reducers between my brows and in the crow’s feet. I was 40 when I got it for the first time. I actually just went last week! I go in only once a year to Dr. Nima Shemirani at EOS Rejuvenation® in Beverly Hills.

I recommend it to my clients, too, even though I don’t perform the procedure myself. Anything that helps someone look [like they want to] is good by me.
