This year’s Met GalaTM; theme is “Camp,” which can be defined as, “A love of the unnatural.” Longtime Lady Gaga fans know that this description fits the star to a T — and we were anticipating truly dynamic hair and makeup from her on the red carpet. (After all, this is the woman who wore a dress made of meat to an award show.) We can confirm that we’re not disappointed: with every step she took, the event’s co-chair revealed dramatic, different aspects of her look.
Of course, many would say that Gaga’s boldest unveiling was that she wore four different outfits, completing her turn down the carpet in a gemstone-encrusted bra and panties, but we were particularly fond of the moment she took off her sunglasses to reveal her dramatic makeup. Gaga’s go-to makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, prepped the singer’s gorgeous skin with the new Marc Jacobs® Beauty YouthquakeTM; Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème ($59), which is loaded with hyaluronic acid to keep the complexion hydrated. She left much of Gaga’s skin to breathe, only using the Marc Jacobs Beauty Accomplice Concealer & Touchup Stick ($32) where needed.
This let the focus on the Oscar winner’s appearance be her lips and her dramatic eyes. Tanno applied the neon pink Marc Jacobs Beauty Le MarcTM; Liquid Lip Crayon in Flaming-Oh! ($32) for an edgy take on a retro-glam pout. The crowning glory of Gaga’s look was absolutely her eyes. They were lined with white pencil well past the lashline, making them appear even bigger than usual. Framing the white was a black cat eye, then bold, ultralong false lashes that appeared to be made of gold foil were applied to both her upper and lower lids. To complete her eye makeup, rhinestone teardrops were glued beneath each eye.
Capping off Lady Gaga’s look for the evening was her platinum blonde hair, which was coiffed in a way that evoked the singer’s style from earlier in her career. Using the ghd platinum+® festival collection styler ($249), stylist Frederic Aspiras created a wavy bob, accenting it with tiny little bows — which were woven out of her strands — and blunt bangs. He used products from the Joico® Defy DamageTM; range, a line dedicated to keeping hair strong, to protect Gaga’s tresses. As devoted fans of Gaga’s campiest looks, we’re hoping the night’s beauty style inspires more “unnatural” hair and makeup for us to love in the future!
