This Concealer Brightens Sleepy Eyes In a Single Swipe

Thanks to a case of hereditary undereye circles, I have become a concealer connoisseur over the past 25 years. Of all of the fantastic formulas I’ve tried, the Clé de Peau Beauté® concealer ($70) thwarts my shadowy areas unlike anything else. I wish I could say I discovered this miraculous stick on my own, but the truth is that it has been one of the most widely-recommended concealers since I started working in the beauty industry. Celebrities love it; makeup artists adore it. Heck, you’re probably reading this review because a friend of yours couldn’t stop raving about the stuff. (If you know me, chances are I was that friend.)

There are a few reasons this formula elicits such praise. First, it is incredibly opaque — so there’s limited opportunity for tangible signs of exhaustion (i.e. circles!) to peek through. And, since it does provide such high-coverage, it’s worth noting that the formula does not cake or crease — a balance rarely achieved in ultra high-coverage formulas.

This concealer is as steadfast as my 15-year-old cat — that is to say, by 5 p.m., it’s still exactly where I put it in the morning. Whereas some formulas (namely those containing oils) slip around and therefore require a setting powder, this one needs no more than a swipe and a few gentle pats to set and blend seamlessly. As per a Clé de Peau brand representative, the formula was designed to “melt into skin to cover uneven tone, spots, and dark circles without a heavy finish.”

The applicator is lipstick-like: simply twist up to access the product, and swipe across the skin for satisfying color payoff. Another commonality with lipstick is its creamy texture: Not wet, not dry. Creamy; nice. The Goldilocks of concealers.

As a sunscreen obsessee, I would be remiss not to mention that the product contains SPF 25. (Why more concealers don’t contain SPF is a mystery to me.) The undereyes are decidedly more delicate than other regions of the face, so it’s comforting to know my makeup is joining forces with my sunscreen to protect the area. Plus, if it’s good enough for A-list celebrities, it’s certainly good enough for me.
