Anyone who’s been disappointed by a less-than-plump pout or longs for the full cheeks of their teenage years have likely tried plenty of quick fixes. But most speedy solutions — like tingling lip glosses or microneedling — really only last for a few hours at most. For longer-lasting (albeit still temporary) results, many people are looking to injectable fillers, which tend to last from six months to a year — or even two years, depending on the type of filler and area of the face treated; that includes some of the top beauty editors in New York City.

Of course, when it comes to fillers (and all things beauty related), these editors seriously know their stuff. So as far as trying out the treatment for yourself goes, there are a few things that these industry experts want you to keep in mind — and that includes finding a doctor you trust. It’s important to do your research and find a licensed provider you trust for filler injections. Scroll through to see all the details about beauty editors’ treatments, including their top advice to you before your own consultation, and more.

[Editor’s note: Injectable filler is a temporary treatment that adds volume to areas of the face such as the lips, cheeks, and laugh lines. Like any medical treatment, it has potential risks and side effects. Be sure to talk to a licensed provider to see if it’s right for you. Have more questions? Who you see for your injectables? Dr. Ellen Marmur, Dr. David Shafer, Dr. Shereene Idriss, and Dr. Dara Liotta

What do you get done? My cheeks.

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to share regarding filler? Bring pictures and Instagrams of what you like and don’t like from the before and afters you see online, as well as other faces you find attractive. The idea is not that you just try to look just like them — it’s so that you can show your doctor what you mean and what language you’re really speaking when you talk about what you want.

Most doctors will be reluctant to flat-out tell you what [treatments they think you should get] — ultimately, it’s about your personal [decision] — so starting things off with a little context can help you feel more comfortable about what you’ll leave with.

Who you see for your injectables? Dr. Dendy Engelman, [who I also see for injectable wrinkle reducers]. I also love that Dendy listens to what I have to say, makes me feel super comfortable, and takes a [measured] approach.

What do you get done? I’ve gotten filler in my lips twice to achieve a slightly fuller look.

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to share regarding filler? Icing [after] is key — and don’t make plans that evening or [for a few days], as you may experience some swelling/bruising. I like to be honest about what I get done (but whether you want to tell people or keep it to yourself is up to you!).

Who you see for your injectables? I saw Kenneth Beer, MD. It was important for me to go to an [expert] injector, especially because the lips are so sensitive.

What do you get done? Injections in my top and bottom lips. I’ve done them twice — once in July 2016, and again before my wedding in March 2017.

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to share regarding filler? I won’t lie and say it didn’t hurt, because it did (even with the numbing), but the downtime was [relatively] brief and I thought my results were so worth it. If [you want to], go for it!

Who do you see for your injectables? I see Lauren Pack at GoodSkin Clinics. She and her sister Lisa will literally feel your face to better understand your unique facial structure and tailor their treatment to you. Their whole aesthetic [philosophy] is the "untouched look," so you don't look like you've gotten anything done — just an [enhanced] version of yourself (at least in my case).

What’s one piece of advice you’d like to share regarding filler? I would do extensive research on whoever you are thinking of going to first. Look at before and after photos of their work to ensure their aesthetic is in line with what you are looking for!
