We’re selective about the formulas we use on our hair, skin, and nails. The Spotlyte 7TM highlights recently-released and/or noteworthy products you can add to your makeup bag, one day at a time. Let’s go shopping.
“Lip gloss” may sound like it belongs in the same ‘90s time capsule as body glitter. But 2019 proved that it can revamp the latter (it’s called body highlighter now), and lip gloss is getting the same dose of modernization. Forget the sticky, glitter-studded glosses of the past — today’s formulas are smooth, nourishing, and designed to enhance your pout to its fullest potential. From tinted lip oils to holographic elixirs, keep reading to discover seven showstoppers worthy of your makeup bag.
Applying the Marc Jacobs® Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer ($28) formula is like spreading diamonds on your lips, thanks to finely-milled, light reflecting pigments. The result: a super-reflective surface that somehow manages not to read “disco.”
Glossier’s® new glosses, simply titled “Lip Gloss” ($14 each), maintain the brand’s “less is more” ethos. The formula comes in three sheer shades (red, holographic, and clear), with high shine — not color payoff — taking center stage. Bonus points for vitamin E, which helps soften lips instantly and over time.
The Charlotte Tilbury® Collagen Lip Bath ($30) is just as gorgeous on the lips as it is in its gilded tube. Though it’s not a plumping gloss, per se, it does have a slight minty kick that’s said to promote plumpness. We’re fond of the new Rosy Glow shade, a peachy hue that’s flattering for all skin tones. (Read an in-depth review of the entire Charlotte Tilbury GlowgasmTM collection.)
The NARS® Oil-infused Lip Tint ($26) is less of a traditional gloss and more of a tinted, nourishing treatment. The formula comes in four semi-opaque hues, each of which is spiked with an ultra-nourishing, antioxidant-rich blend of vitamins A and E and pomegranate extract. A single swipe is all you need for a glistening dose of lip TLC.
There are a few reasons why Clé De Peau Beauté Radiant Liquid Rouge® Shine Liquid Lipstick ($50 each) is worth the splurge. For example, if you value the application experience, don’t miss the ultra-soft doe foot on this one. The formula is similarly soft — one swipe instantly smooths the appearance of dryness, thanks to an infusion of skincare-quality ingredients. Lastly, we’d be remiss not to mention the packaging; it’s less utilitarian vessel, more of an ornament to tuck away in your most precious purse...
“Holographic lipgloss” may sound like an unflattering trend, but one swipe of the iridescent Kevyn Aucoin® Glass Glow LipTM Gloss ($26) challenges this notion. The formula comes in three flattering shades, but we’re partial to Crystal Clear, a highly-reflective mix of clear gloss and subtle, iridescent pigment. The formula is also less sticky than most glosses we’ve tried.
In an age of hyper-customization, it’s hardly surprising that lip gloss is following suit. Case in point: Becca® Cosmetics Liptuitive Glow Gloss® ($25). What appears an alien blue in the tube transforms into a customized shade when it reacts with your unique lip chemistry. Whether it’ll veer plummy or rosy on you, we can’t say, but the hue is bound to flatter your complexion.
