Olive Oil, Face Cupping, and More Skin and Beauty Secrets Acupuncturists Love

Acupuncturists’ favorite natural beauty products

Many celebrities have touted the benefits of acupuncture — yet as trendy as that makes the treatment sound, by no means is it a new fad. Acupuncture’s origins are in traditional Chinese medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years.

The methodology is tied to the belief that illness or discomfort is caused by a disruption or blockage of energy (“Qi”) in the body. By positioning thin needles into the skin, the Qi is released and can flow more evenly, and supposedly improves mental and physical health.

Whether you swear by acupuncture or not, there’s no denying that the practice is one of the most natural treatments available. It should come as no surprise, then, that a great deal of acupuncture practitioners apply the clean philosophy to their entire lifestyle. This, of course,  includes beauty and skincare products! We tapped five experts in the field to share what natural products are in their regimens — and their best beauty tips — outside of the office.

Dr. Shari Auth, DACM, LAC, LMT at WTHN®

Age: 47

Location: New York, NY

Go-to natural products in her regimen:

WTHN Run The WorldTM ($45 for 120 tablets): “[These stress management supplements] help me stay cool and calm while getting things done. Plus, the formulas are organic and come in convenient tablet form for on-the-go consumption.”

[Editor’s note: As always, talk to your doctor before starting or stopping any new supplement.]

NOKTM Apothecary Squalene Oil ($18): “I use squalene oil because it balances oil production, giving just enough moisture without making my skin oily.” (Read more about the benefits of squalane.)

Beauty tip she swears by: “I love face cupping because it relaxes and tones [the appearance of] the muscles of the face. It’s also so relaxing.”

[Editor’s note: If you take blood thinners, talk to your doctor before trying facial cupping.]

Dr. Elizabeth Trattner, AP, DOM

Age: 53

Location: Miami, FL

Go-to natural products in her regimen:

AyunaTM Nourishing Artisan Soap ($38): “This formula contains active carbon. It can take off makeup [without stripping] the skin’s microbiome. This soap is eco-friendly (no packaging), and lasts for half a year.

Kindred Skincare Co.TM Oil Cleanse ($41): “I used a different oil for 30 years, but this one broke the habit. This green cleansing oil helped me convert to a less toxic beauty line.”

SulwhasooTM Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Water ($82): “I love this toner because it uses Chinese herbs to help balance the skin. The herbs in this formula have [shown] they can brighten the skin and stimulate new cells in the dermis.”

Beauty tip she swears by: “You can use a zillion dollars worth of products on your face, but nothing replaces good nutrition and pure food. I have flipped patient’s acne in just a few weeks by cleaning up their diet.”

Liz Carlson, DACM, LAC at Common PointTM

Age: 37

Location: New York, NY

Go-to natural products in her regimen:

Lauren’s All PurposeTM Salve ($14-$48): “As an acupuncturist, I wash my hands a lot during the day, and this product saves them. It moistens dryness and smoothes rough patches instantaneously — almost magically. I swear this salve can fix anything! It is one of the best products I’ve discovered on what seems like a lifelong search for an all-natural beauty routine.”

Savor//Beauty® Champagne Cleanser ($52): “When I began to understand how vital it is to feed my skin the good stuff, I put as much importance on skincare as I do my diet. After all, our skin is our largest organ. Early on, I discovered Savor Beauty, and the Champagne Cleanser has been my standby ever since. This cleanser washes the New York City day away from my face without stripping my skin.”

Primally Pure® Geranium Deodorant ($16): “It feels like an understatement to say that I have searched the world high and low for a natural deodorant that works and keeps working. I have finally found the winner. I love the Geranium! It works so well that I wouldn’t even have to reapply between workday and date night.”

Beauty tip she swears by: “Beauty starts on the inside! Very first thing — way before coffee, breakfast, or a workout — I have a tall glass of filtered water with a large squeeze of lemon plus a microgreen supplement — something like Mint + Greens by Sunfood®. This stimulates detoxification, which is a vital element of glowing skin.”

Sarah Coles Mckeown, MS, LAC, LMT at bloom acupunctureTM

Age: 47

Location: New York, NY

Go-to natural products in her regimen:

COOLA® Classic Body Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 ($32): “I love warm weather and look forward to spring and summer all year long. I also have very pale skin that burns easily. I have been using COOLA products for about four years now. I really appreciate that the products are healthy for people and [safe] for the environment, while also providing sun protection that I need.”

COOLA Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30 ($18): I'm very picky about the lip balms I use. Not only do I want a lip balm that looks good, but I really try to avoid anything super sticky or wet. I like products that moisturize and make my lips feel great. Even when i'm not worried about the sun, this is still one of my favorite lip balms.”

Aimee Raupp® Organic Rejuvenating Facial Oil ($46): “At the same time that I stopped using anti-acne products, I realized I needed to focus on nourishing and moisturizing my skin in a whole new way. Instead of moisturizing gels and creams, I started using my friend [and fellow acupuncturist] Aimee's organic rejuvenating facial oil, and I've never looked back. Most days I can leave the house with a bare face after using this facial oil. I get a lot of compliments from my patients about how great my skin looks — usually on days when I'm makeup free.”

Beauty tips she swears by: “Replacing cleansers with cleansing oils is a game changer! I swear by using a cleansing oil and soft, wet, organic baby washcloth instead of makeup remover and [foaming] cleanser. I've tried several different cleansing oils, but right now the one i'm loving is this one by True Botanicals®.

A second beauty tip I swear by is wearing an SPF swim shirt in the water at the beach. I know this is a garment instead of a beauty product, but I honestly think of it as a vital part of my sun and skincare routine. I love the beach, and especially when I'm on vacation in a place with gorgeous water — the Caribbean, Bermuda, or the Mediterranean — I like to spend tons of time lounging on a float in the water.”

Dr. Deborah Rothman, DACM, LAC, Dipl. Ac. at AcuZen Inc.TM

Age: 47

Location: Woodmere and Lawrence, NY

Go-to natural products in her regimen:

CBD ClinicTM Level 5: “This is an incredible natural cream which reduces localized pain from arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. I recommend topical CBD products for applying to joint, muscle, and nerve pain. It can be used on the back, the knee, the shoulder, etc. It contains ingredients such as menthol and camphor. ”

Beauty tip she swears by: “Water, water, water! Hydration is key to beautiful skin, and dehydration is very common. I recommend chucking the cups, and instead drinking from a water bottle that is marked by the oz. measurement. This way, at the end of the day you know exactly how much water you have had.”
