In The PathTM;, we spotlight different women making a difference in the fashion, beauty, wellness, medical aesthetics, and more industries. Here, New York City dietician and certified holistic cannabis practitioner, Brooke Alpert, shares her road to success.
When Brooke Alpert studied nutrition in college, she hadn’t imagined it would lead her to cannabis. Yet, today, the 40-year-old mother of two has transitioned from working as a registered dietician to a certified holistic cannabis practitioner. As much of a departure as her new gig may sound, it’s actually within her wellness wheelhouse.
“[As a certified holistic cannabis practitioner], I counsel my patients on how to optimize their wellness by using components of the cannabis plant,” Alpert explains. One such component is CBD, or cannabidiol — a non-psychoactive part of the plant that’s purported to deliver countless health benefits.
Alpert became a proponent of CBD after it seemed to quell symptoms of her husband’s debilitating autoimmune disease. “When I saw CBD work for him, I brought it into my practice and started [studying] to become a certified cannabis practitioner,” she shares. Below, Alpert dishes on CBD, the nutritionist-approved diet she follows for good skin, and why beauty and wellness are inextricably intertwined.
Spotlyte: What are the benefits of CBD?
BA: How long do you have!? Just kidding, the benefits of CBD range from incredible clinical benefits to the wellness world. It’s been shown to positively affect everything from stress, sleep, exercise recovery, pain, and even skin when used topically.
Spotlyte: What are your favorite beauty and skincare products?
BA: I have sensitive skin. I've always found that the less I do the better, and the more I mess with it, the more problems I have. I use a beautycounter® gentle cleanser morning and night. In the morning, I'll use a CBD serum plus a small amount of Ponds®. I always use sunscreen, mainly Coola's® tinted face sunscreen. It's matte and basically has become my foundation. Vertly® lip butter is my favorite CBD beauty product! I never wear lipstick and this is the perfect [hybrid] of a Chapstick and some color. At night, I've been using a CBD and saffron cream from Plant AlchemyTM; that is incredible.
Spotlyte: As a dietician, what is your daily diet like?
BA: I always start my day with a cup of coffee with a big scoop of Daily HabitTM; [a powdered CBD supplement]. Nothing puts me in a better space mentally and physically. The rest of the day varies, but I always eat lots of greens and healthy proteins. I drink copious amounts of water, I don't drink alcohol that much, and I tend to avoid sugar in my meals. I'd rather save it for a legit dessert — especially since I can't pass up a good chocolate chip cookie, ever.
Spotlyte: How does your diet affect your skin and beauty?
BA: Your skin is often a good reflection of how well you’ve been eating. Diets high in sugar often show up on your face [in the form of] premature signs of aging. Diets filled with healthy fats, lean protein, and tons of green veggies will all [promote] healthy skin.
Spotlyte: What are the best foods to eat or drink for glowing skin?
BA: Water. The best thing you can do for your skin is to stay hydrated. CBD is also an incredible supplement to take to not only help with inflammation, but it’s also an incredible antioxidant.
Spotlyte: What's your beauty philosophy?
BA: Take care of yourself inside and out.
Spotlyte: What lessons do you hope to pass on to your daughters?
BA: With my girls, ages 10 and 5, I am working on getting them into good skincare and nutrition habits. If you've been taught good basic habits when you're younger, things are easier when you're older. I hope my girls remember to wash their faces every night before bed. Plus, when in doubt, sunscreen is always the answer!
Spotlyte: What medical aesthetic and in-office treatments do you get?
BA: I do whatever my dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman tells me to do! As for injections, I leave it to Dr. Dendy. She knows [the aesthetic I like], and I'm always happy with [her work]. Whenever I go to see her, I always get an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light, a broad spectrum laser treatment for brown spots, melasma, broken capillaries, and sun spots).
Spotlyte: Any tips for building a social media presence?
BA: Don’t fake it. Show the real stuff – be honest and real. People relate to that so much better!
Spotlyte: What do you like to do in your downtime?
BA: As a working mom, I’m always juggling. So when I have real downtime, I like to fully dive into fun activities [with my kids]. Hanging out with them is a priority.
Spotlyte: What's your self-care routine?
Spotlyte: What's your fitness routine?
BA: I love mixing it up, but HIIT classes at the Fhitting Room® are always part of my main workouts. Living in NYC, I’m so lucky to have this city as my playground. On the days I can’t get to the gym, I make sure to walk everywhere I can. It’s easy to walk over four miles here and not even feel it. It [allows me to] justify those days when I skip the gym.
Spotlyte: If you weren't a dietician, what would you want to be doing?
BA: My role as co-founder of Daily Habit has really been my main job this last year, so running my new company and spreading the word about CBD is it!
