After taking center stage for years in the lip category, once-trendy matte liquid lipsticks have been dethroned by glosses. Our parched pouts were on board with the idea, but the rest of us were hesitant. The ‘90s and early ‘00s were my formative years, and one of the more popular beauty looks at the time was thickly-lacquered, frosty lips rimmed in darker liner. We shuddered thinking of this resurgence, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised: today’s glosses are much plusher, less syrupy, and more refined than those you might remember. In fact, we’re finding ourselves reaching for gloss more often than not these days. Here, eight of the best lip gloss formulas that our editors are loving right now.

What: Chanel® Rouge Coco® Gloss in Rose Tentation ($30)
Why: Of course, Chanel’s version of lip gloss is absolutely sophisticated. Even the act of pulling this chic tube out of my purse makes me feel fancy. The colors are sheer tints, meant to be worn alone or layered over lipsticks (especially matte ones) to “transform” the color underneath. Thanks to a smooth formula (re: non-tacky) containing coconut oil, peptides, and vitamin E, you won’t have to worry about your hair getting stuck to your lips on a windy day. Since I can’t resist a flattering pink-berry, Rose Tentation is my go-to shade.

Why: I love translucent glosses with a tinge of sparkle. This shimmery tube is just that. I’m also very much into lip health — I find that my lips often peel, and require a great deal of pampering to stay smooth — so the nourishing antioxidants in this formula help to combat those chapped lip days.

Why: When it comes to lip gloss, I prefer a shade that’s very much “my lips but better” to fake a fuller pucker. I’ll admit, I was hesitant to try this formula when it crossed my desk, and I observed the pearly white shimmer suspended in the tube, but I needn’t have worried. The micro-fine particles simply add another dose of sultry dimension to this high-sheen, luxurious lacquer. For that reason (though gloss is admittedly a bit messy), this is one of my go-to date night lip choices.

What: Charlotte Tilbury® Lip Lustre Lip Gloss in High SocietyTM ($22)
Why: It’s official: lip gloss is back. Now that it’s trending once more, I’ve been on the hunt for my ideal formula. Luckily, the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre Lip Gloss in High Society came across my desk. The sheer, berry-colored gloss uses lotus flower extract to hydrate my pout so I never have flaky lips after using it. For an added boost, layer this lacquer over lipstick to amp up the intensity.

Why: Back in January, I decided to make 2019 my “Year of the Lip Gloss.” It took me months to find my perfect formula — sheer, not sticky, super-shimmery, and practically weightless — but I finally did in Star Babe. This silky, clear gloss is packed with glimmering gold and pink particles which add a luminous, long-lasting shine wherever you apply it — lips, eyes, and cheeks are all fair game. Don’t be afraid of the blinding white-gold glimmer in the tube: the formula goes on super sheer with a sophisticated sparkle.

Why: Hot sauce and lip gloss are two of my favorite things in life, so it was love at first doe-foot swipe with Flesh’s Hot Sauce Lip Gloss in To The Window. This fiery rosé hue amped up my natural lip color while adding a blast of opulent, glassy shine. Not to mention, it made my pout feel sexy, spicy, and basically anything but sticky. Why: In a product category that’s full of stickiness, this formula manages to impart high shine without catching your hair. It’s not a plumping gloss, per se, but it does contain hyaluronic acid spheres to hydrate instantly and over time. I love the formula so much, I own it multiple shades. My favorite: a holographic purple hue that’s surprisingly flattering worn alone or atop literally any lipstick.

Why: I’m a fan of multi-purpose products, especially when they enable me to dial-up the sexiness factor as needed to fit my mood. The gel-oil texture of Lip Retreat in Excursion allows me to do just that, and either smooth on a thin layer for a slight tint and shine, or shellac it on for a sultry deep berry hue. Blended with rose canina, apricot kernel, and avocado oils, it provides quick and lasting hydration so effectively that it’s one of my go-tos for smoothing dry and chapped lips. On weekends, you can even find me in my P.J.s sans makeup, save for a luscious Lip Retreat pout.
