We Asked 6 People Why They Finally Tried CoolSculpting — and They Didn’t Hold Back

Maybe you’ve spent four days a week at the gym for the past year and never seen your love handles budge an inch. Or perhaps you’re a bride-to-be dealing with back fat in anticipation of wearing a strapless gown. Either way, you’re fed up — and to get rid of your unwanted fat once and for all, you’re considering a CoolSculpting® treatment.

Making the decision to get any sort of aesthetic treatment, including CoolSculpting, usually involves a hefty amount of research. A deep dive into what CoolSculpting is, how fat freezing works, and the areas it can treat are all extremely helpful to the decision process. For many people, though, the ultimate deciding factor is often hearing from others who have already tried the treatment.

Editor's Note

The CoolSculpting treatment is a non-invasive fat freezing treatment that effectively reduces fat in certain self-proclaimed “problem spots” in the submental and submandibular areas, thigh, abdomen, flank, and upper arm, along with bra fat, back fat, and underneath the buttocks (you know, those bulges that just won’t go away, regardless of how much you sweat it out on the treadmill). While it isn’t a weight loss solution, fat-freezing can reduce pouches of fat. As with any procedure, there are risks and side effects, so talk to a licensed provider to see if it’s right for you.

If you’re considering CoolSculpting, but are on the fence — and want to hear testimonials from people who have tried it before making the plunge — read on. We asked six people around the country to share why they ultimately decided to get CoolSculpting, and whether the chilly treatment lived up to their expectations.

The patient: Brianna*, 29

The location: New York, NY

The provider: Y. Claire Chang, MD at Union Square Laser Dermatology

The areas treated: Thighs, abdomen, flanks

The backstory: Brianna had such a positive experience with her first CoolSculpting treatment, in March 2018, that she has been back two more times for other body parts since.

Spotlyte: What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?

Brianna: Initially, I felt like I needed to get rid of some of the extra fat that was difficult to lose with diet and exercise alone. No matter how many spin or pilates classes I did, I noticed that there was just a little extra layer that wouldn’t go away. So, I targeted areas where it was difficult for me to lose that extra jiggle.

Spotlyte: What did you think of the CoolSculpting treatment?:

Brianna: CoolSculpting was amazing. It made me [like the way I looked] in a bikini and naked again. It has been more than a year since I had my outer thighs done, and [the treated areas] have stayed totally contoured since then. My abdomen was done four months ago, and I saw the full results two months in. It was pretty significant for me: I went down a dress size, and now look more hourglass-shaped. [I am motivated to continue] to hit the gym more, because I want to maintain the results. Personally, CoolSculpting is a [good financial] investment for me.

The patient: Elise, 40

The location: Boca Raton, Florida

The provider: Kenneth Beer, MD

The areas treated: Stomach, flanks, upper back, double chin

The backstory: After her first CoolSculpting experience, Elise was so pleased that she opted to have additional areas treated.

Spotlyte: What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?

Elise: Who isn’t attracted to the idea of freezing fat [by just sitting there]? I mean, sign me up. Before committing to anything invasive, I always try the non-surgical route first because of the [little to no downtime] factor. I felt like I tried every trick in the book to target these areas, but they were unresponsive to working out and dieting.

Spotlyte: What did you think of the CoolSculpting treatment?:

Elise: It's now been one year since I had CoolSculpting done the first time, and only a few weeks since I treated the area under my chin. The treatment did wonders on my flanks and bra [fat], but admittedly, the results on my stomach I felt were mediocre. I haven’t seen much of a change under my chin just yet, but I know the results are coming. I would recommend this to others and do it again myself, but keep in mind that this won’t tighten up loose skin in the way surgical procedures can, [since it is not a skin tightening procedure]. As long as your expectations are realistic, I say go for it.

The patient: Roya, 43

The location: Brooklyn, New York

The provider: Inna Knyazevych at In-Glo Med Spa℠

The areas treated: Abdomen and thighs

The backstory: Roya’s experience is proof that finding the right provider for you is key to a positive experience. Her first CoolSculpting treatments was performed in Manhattan, and she experienced minor, if any, results. A few years later, she decided to give the treatment another chance, and is so glad she did.

Spotlyte: What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?

Roya: I decided to do CoolSculpting because I had [excess fat] around my stomach and thighs. Inna was very understanding about my concerns, especially since I tried CoolSculpting at a different [office] and gave up on the treatment. [Read about why this editor was glad he got CoolSculpting a second time here.] She showed me her before and after photos, and assured me that this time the treatment [should] work. I trusted her and [had my stomach treated].

Spotlyte: What did you think of the CoolSculpting treatment?:

Roya: It’s now been eight months since my CoolSculpting treatment. I was so happy with the results that I went back and did my inner thighs. I am watching what I am eating and exercising just a little bit to maintain my shape. It really made me love my [look], and I even referred a friend who’s out of state.

The patient: Joshua*, 35

The location: Atlanta, Georgia

The provider: SkinReMEDI®

The areas treated: Love handles and flanks

The backstory: After being dissatisfied by stubborn body fat that wouldn’t go away after regular exercise, Joshua tried CoolSculpting at a provider recommended to him by his husband in July 2019. He shares that his experience was “nothing short of amazing.”

What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?:

Joshua: I am a pretty active person; I love playing tennis and go to the gym three to four times a week. However, I was never able to get rid of the love handles around my tummy and flanks. My husband had a treatment done at SkinReMEDI, and he had great results, so I decided to give it a try. When I approached the team at the office, the staff was super friendly, caring, and explained to me the different types of services they offer. Based on my body type and areas I wanted to focus on, they recommended I tried CoolSculpting instead of the treatment my husband had.

Spotlyte: What did you think of the CoolSculpting treatment?:

Joshua: My experience was nothing short of amazing! The staff was so accommodating and even worked around my schedule, working over lunch break and off hours. [When] I started to see the results . . . ab lines started to show and my pants were a bit loose, which would explain the flanks going away. I’m only at the beginning of my CoolSculpting experience, but I believe it is totally worth it. I will definitely do it again.

The patient: Bradley, 32

The location: New York, New York

The provider: Purely Natural Medical Spa

The areas treated: Lower abdomen and love handles

The backstory: In January 2019, Bradley decided to try CoolSculpting to target excess fat that just wouldn’t go away. Since then, he’s had two more sessions performed on the same areas.

Spotlyte: What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?

Bradley: I had very stubborn lower belly fat and love handles. I work out three days a week and had tried dieting — even doing a vegan diet and “cleansing” — yet those areas would not budge.

Spotlyte: Was CoolSculpting worth it?

Bradley: It’s now been roughly five months since my last treatment, and the results have been great. I saw minor results following the first treatment, but after my second treatment in March, my stomach is noticeably flatter [in the treated areas]. I would definitely do it again. A third treatment was recommended, and I will be back in the fall.

The patient: Maureen, 49

The location: New York, New York

The provider: Just Ageless®

The areas treated: Abdomen and double chin

The backstory: Like many of the other patients, Maureen faced stubborn fat on her abs that she struggled to get rid of, despite consistent exercise. After experiencing “astounding” results with this area, she got another treatment on her double chin.

Spotlyte: What made you finally decide to try CoolSculpting?

Maureen: I decided to try CoolSculpting on my abdomen because I work out regularly, but I could not get some stubborn areas to reduce. The second area where I had CoolSculpting done was [under] my chin. No amount of exercise was going to make my double chin disappear, as it really was a matter of heredity.

Spotlyte: Was CoolSculpting worth it?

Maureen: I was beyond pleased with the treatment on my abdomen, and continue exercising to maintain the results. And after having [under] my chin done, I [started to see a] difference within about six weeks. The results are something I [was not able to] achieve through diet and exercise.
