New York’s cramped quarters and sky-high rent can make it hard to keep just about any personal or financial secret from a spouse. Cosmetic injectables fit into both categories, and every day, women across the city are deciding whether or not to divulge this investment to their significant others.
Some are open and share that they get injectables with their husbands, and some couples even see medical aesthetics as a cornerstone of date night. Others still choose not to reveal what they’ve tried — or only discuss it if their significant other happens to find out. Here, we’re focusing on the latter. We talked with five New York-based women, who describe in detail how their guys found out about their injectables. While all the stories have a happy ending, some of these stories will seriously make you laugh out loud!
[Editor’s note: Injectable wrinkle reducers temporarily smooth the look of moderate to severe wrinkles in certain areas of the face, including the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet; they should not be used more frequently than every three months. Injectable filler is a temporary treatment that adds volume to areas of the face such as the lips, cheeks, and laugh lines. Like any medical treatment, both injectable wrinkle reducers and injectable fillers have potential risks and side effects. Talk to a licensed provider to see if they’re right for you. How he found out: “My husband knows that for me, beauty [and medical aesthetics are] life. I am obsessed with my job. I love getting to try out new treatments, facials, lasers, and injectable wrinkle reducers as a major perk of representing a variety of dermatologists and estheticians here and around the country. We have been together eight years — which is basically forever in NYC — and I began getting injectable wrinkle reducers about two years into us dating. Like a typical dude, he had no clue — nada. After maybe the fourth or fifth time, he did make a comment that I looked ‘really good,’ which hey, I’ll take.
It wasn’t until just a few months ago that the secret really slipped. We signed a new modern medispa brand, and I decided to finally try lip injections, which I had been wanting to give a go for years. I timed it around my husband’s friend’s bachelor party, which just so happened to be in the city — but my husband wasn’t going to stay at home; he was going to stay at the hotel with his friends.
For some reason or another — after my appointment, mind you — my husband texted me saying that they are short a bed and that he is just going to stay at our place. I panicked, but figured he would be lit, and I would already be asleep. What I forgot about was the next morning, when I woke up, my lips were swollen. I swear, he screamed. I thought about claiming allergic reaction, bug bite, food poisoning, anything — but, I decided to fess up. Honestly, he didn’t even care.”

How he found out: “I decided to get [injectable wrinkle reducer] last year, and some [filler] in my cheeks to give my narrow face some [volume]. Honestly, I [really like my results]. However, I didn’t tell my SO, mainly because he is such a feminist — not that feminists don’t get injectables — but he really loves me for me. I figured he would give me a hard time and discourage me from doing it beforehand. I had all these ideas of what he might say and how he might judge me, so I kept it mum. Just because we’re in a committed relationship doesn’t mean I can’t keep anything to myself!
He found out one day, because one morning I cleaned out my purse in a rush and left a mess all over our kitchen table, including receipts from the past week — and guess what was in the midst of it? At first, I was annoyed at him for going through my receipts; but, honestly, if he had a few receipts lying on the table and one was for $1,200, I would definitely give it a second glance! He sent me a photo of the bill without a caption. I called him immediately and began to explain myself — and to my surprise, he was so kind about it, and he felt bad that I thought he would judge me or love me any less.”

How he found out: “My man and I are in a committed long-term relationship with no plans to get engaged or married. We have been together for five-and-a-half years, and I started getting injectable wrinkle reducers right after my 30th birthday as a gift to myself. I didn’t tell my SO, mainly because I know he would ask about the cost and potentially give me a hard time.
We are trying to save, to hopefully get a little brownstone somewhere outside the city, like New Jersey or Long Island, and we are getting really close to our financial goal. Literally every penny counts. And while I’m passionate about getting a place of our own, I’m also passionate about not looking [wrinkled]. Because I am terrible at hiding things, he found out one day. I was talking on the phone to my mom, telling her about my day and about getting injectable wrinkle reducers. When I hung up the phone, he just smiled and mischievously said, ‘I knew it!’ There was no mention of the cost, and we both had a good laugh!”

How he found out: “I never intentionally kept my injectable wrinkle reducers a secret from my SO. I started getting treated right around the time when we were just casually dating — so letting my new man in on it didn’t seem necessary or all that sexy, honestly. I’m pretty [subtle] with my treatments, and never really thought twice about not telling him.
One day, I had an unpleasant experience with someone in the waiting room at my physician’s office. Since I never intentionally kept it a secret, I was describing my day to him and said something like, ‘So while I was at my injectable wrinkle reducer appointment today, there was this woman who . . .’ He was like, ‘Whoa, injectable wrinkle reducers? Since when? Does it hurt?’ He was so curious. He told me that his brother had actually recently gotten injectable wrinkle reducers and he had been interested in it, too!”

How he found out: “I am married to my college sweetheart. We have known each other for about nine years already. He knows me and my face well, because we have literally grown up in front of each other’s eyes. About a month before our wedding, [I decided to] try injectable wrinkle reducers to smooth out the [appearance of my] forehead wrinkles, so that on the big day, I wouldn’t be thinking about them when taking photos.
Literally the moment the injectable wrinkle reducers [started to] kick in, about a week after my first treatment, my then-fiancé asked me at dinner that night if I had gotten treated. We’ve never kept secrets, so I confirmed — and then we laughed. That was it. He’s so observant, it’s crazy! Funny enough, my own mother still hasn’t noticed, and it’s been years.”
