It’s only natural to crave a getaway from dreary winter weather. Maybe you’re fixing for a tropical oasis nestled against the ocean, a desert reprieve that allows you to bask in the magic of the earth, or a ski resort that doubles down on your winter experience and gives you a good chance to practice your skiing skills. Whatever your spirit wants, we have you covered. Here, we’ve selected five of our favorite spas nationwide for decompressing when the weather hits the single digits.
The Spa: The Spa at The Breakers®
Location: Palm Beach Island, Florida
Why: If you’re going to venture to any part of Florida for a winter getaway, let it be The Breakers on Palm Beach Island. This historic, high-glam resort has housed many with exceptionally good taste, including the Kennedys, Elton John, and Sofia Vergara. The resort, originally constructed in 1896, is situated within a 140-acre tropical oasis that faces the ocean, and features an exquisite indoor and outdoor spa.
While there, try the Deep Sea Signature Facialsm ($275), an 80-minute treat that utilizes hot and cold elements to stimulate circulation, activate cell repair, and nourish your skin. The Rose Quartz Massagesm ($275) is quite special, too. Guests are laid on a bed of warm and flowing alpha-quartz sand while the practitioner uses choreographed movements to soothe and massage.
Location: Scottsdale, Arizona
Why: Some consider Scottsdale a mecca of luxury resorts and spa treatments, and if there’s one spa to rule them all, it is arguably what the locals simply refer to as “Sanctuary.” This tranquil 53-acre reprieve is tucked at the nape of the city’s majestic Camelback Mountain and boasts a menu of Zen-inspired treatments.
For a calming treatment that invites you to wholly slip away, try the The Sanctuary Salt Stone Massagesm ($199). It incorporates warmed, hand-carved salt stones from the Himalayan Mountains to reduce inflammation, nourish the body, and help you relax. You could also opt for The Sanctuary Luxury Facialsm ($289), a signature treatment that uses restorative stones and crystals, a warmed herbal poultice, and customized products. The spa itself is quite intimate with only 12 indoor and outdoor rooms, and all guests have access to the meditation garden and soothing reflection pond.
The Spa: Magnolia Wellness℠
Location: Costa Mesa, California
Why: Think of Magnolia Wellness as a destination for not just your body, but also for your soul. The well-appointed wellness hot spot, which is located in Orange County, combines a variety of therapy modalities that aim to heal guests from the inside out, some of which are quite difficult to find elsewhere.
For instance, Magnolia Wellness offers MoxibustionTM (price varies), a unique treatment that utilizes the moxa herb, which is known for its warming and toning abilities. The process of burning the herb (also known as moxibustion) atop an acupuncture needle is believed to help build Qi and process excess fluid out of the body. Magnolia also offers traditional acupuncture, esoteric acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, nutritional support, reiki, tarot reading, and mental and physical wellness services.
The Spa: The Cliff Spa℠ at Snowbird®
Location: Snowbird, Utah
Why: Those craving a true winter getaway complete with soft snowfall, roaring fireplaces, and perhaps a little skiing, may find a winner in Snowbird. The ski resort is sandwiched between towering snow-capped mountains and is an ideal destination for skiers, but you don’t have to be a top skier to have fun. This is especially true since The Cliff Spa is so magnificent. (Do consider taking a lesson from one of their incredible instructors, though.)
Not only does the spa feature a wow-worthy, large-scale rooftop hot tub — imagine soaking in the warmth while snowflakes fall on your shoulders — but its menu is robust. The Mountain Meditationsm ($150) is particularly noteworthy. It begins with a gentle dry exfoliation followed by a nourishing seaweed wrap. While the wrap works its magic, stones are strategically placed along the body to rebalance chakras. If you'd rather nurture your face, the Healing Botanical Facialsm ($150) combines rosehip oil, white tea, and calendula to repair, soothe, and nourish your skin.
Location: San Antonio, Texas
Why: It’s hard not to feel like you are one with nature at the Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness Center at La Cantera Resort & Spa. For starters, the resort is located atop one of the highest points in San Antonio, and it was built strategically to offer incredible panoramic views of the Texas sky and below. There are even open-air spa rooms that allow you to breathe in the environment around you while partaking in a pampering session.
The interior of the spa — built across 25,000 square feet — features a dry sauna lined with pink Himalayan salt bricks and a stunning, body-nourishing warm saline vitality pool that all guests can access. Since you're in Texas, it makes sense to request the Absolute Texassm($250) treatment, a two-hour body wrap and massage that utilizes locally crafted beeswax and honey with a touch of lavender. The Aroma Clear Facialsm ($195) is another one-of-a-kind option. It deeply cleans and brightens skin with a mask, Bioelectric Gelsm and antibacterial high-frequency currents.
