Despite a career full of glam squads, Miranda Kerr experienced a self-proclaimed beauty faux pas early on — after all, she grew up in the 1980s. “When I was younger, everyone had curly hair and was doing perms,” said Kerr, 36. “I had a perm, but I also had a fringe that was straight. That was not the best look for me.”
The Australian supermodel has come a long way since those bad hair days. She’s been a part of major beauty campaigns for Maybelline® and Clinique®, moved to Los Angeles, married Snapchat® co-founder Evan Spiegel, became a mom of three (Flynn, 9, Hart, 2, and newborn Myles), and founded skincare line KORA® Organics, of which she is CEO.
On February 3, the decade-old brand launched its latest product, Noni NightTM AHA Resurfacing Serum, which resurfaces skin and increases cellular turnover for smoother, more refined skin. (Naturally, it’s become a part of Kerr’s skincare routine, too.)
Between debuting products, running a company, raising children (and breastfeeding!), and spending time with her family, Kerr may be sleeping less, but she has no qualms about her complexion. “My skin has never looked better,” said the model/mogul. Of course, we had to ask what she’s doing to keep it looking so great.
In this one-on-one interview, Kerr outlines her step-by-step skincare routine, reveals the best career advice she’s received (which happens to be from her husband), and tells us about the machines she owns for at-home aesthetics treatments.
Spotlyte: What have your children taught you about beauty?
Miranda Kerr: Honestly, I feel the most fulfilled and happiest when they're happy, smiling at me, and giggling with me. It doesn't matter if I haven't had enough sleep — they just light up my whole heart, my whole being. It's just really the best feeling in the world and makes everything worthwhile.
Spotlyte: How has your skincare routine changed since having kids?
MK: Since I had kids, the only thing that changed is that I'm now using some of the new products like the KORA Organics Noni BrightTM Vitamin C Serum in the morning and the Noni Night AHA Resurfacing Serum. Those two products have really helped me with my pigmentation.
I use all of the body products on the kids, like the Noni GlowTM Body Balm, the face balms, the body wash, and the body lotion. I have since my little guy [Flynn] was born, and he's nine now.
Spotlyte: You’ve been dealing with pigmentation for almost a decade.
MK: It's something that I've struggled with ever since I got pregnant with Flynn. But, my pigmentation has never looked better. It's almost completely faded. These products I've been using have made a dramatic difference in my skin. People are like, “Wow, your skin looks incredible.” And I'm like, “Thanks, I am barely sleeping.” I'm breastfeeding. It's a 24-hour-a-day job, having three kids now.
Spotlyte: What does your morning skincare routine entail?
MK: First, I cleanse my face using the KORA Organics Foaming Cleanser. It has green tea extract and it's a very gentle cleanser, so it doesn't strip your skin. After that, I use the KORA Organics Energizing Citrus Mist, which is a toner, but very uplifting. Then, I use the Vitamin C Serum, which helps brighten your skin. It's helped me so much with pigmentation. I apply KORA Organics Noni Glow Face Oil and KORA Organics Noni Radiant Eye Oil. On top of that, I put KORA Organics Hydrating Moisturizer for Dry Skin all over my face and decolletage.
About three to four times a week, in the shower, I use the KORA Organics Turmeric 2-in-1 Brightening & Exfoliating Mask as a scrub. I use it as a mask when I'm washing my hair. The scrub is so invigorating because it contains peppermint aromatherapy. It has your natural AHA and papaya enzymes, and it has physical exfoliation with the rosehip seeds.
Spotlyte: What's in your makeup bag?
MK: I always have RMS Beauty® “Un” Cover-UpTM Concealer in number 22. I use that as a concealer, but then I also put a drop of the Noni Glow Facel Oil in there and mix it with a brush for overall dewy coverage for my skin. I am obsessed with tweezers, so I always have tweezers in my makeup bag. I have an eyelash curler and those little eyebrow brushes. I have Charlotte Tilbury® mascara in there, and Charlotte Tilbury powder as well. I have KORA Organics Crystal LuminizerTM Rose Quartz in there. The lip liner I like is Laura Mercier® Baby LipsTM.
Spotlyte: What is your evening skincare routine?
MK: It's pretty similar, except I swap out the foaming cleanser for KORA Organics Cream Cleanser for Dry Skin. I double cleanse using the cream cleanser. At night, I swap out the Energizing Citrus Mist for KORA Organics Calming Lavender Mist, because it's really a great way to set the tone for the evening routine. I also spritz it on the pillow. Then, I use the new Noni Night AHA Resurfacing Serum. It contains natural AHAs and the BHAs that really help with cellular turnover. You wake up, and your skin feels so smooth in the morning. I do the remainder of my routine with the eye oil, the face oil, and the moisturizer. Right before I go to sleep, I use the KORA Organics Noni Glow Sleeping Mask. It has natural hyaluronic acid, and it plumps the skin. You wake up in the morning and your skin is all bouncy and dewy.
Spotlyte: What beauty treatments do you love?
MK: I get microdermabrasion and oxygen facials. I have the machines at home. A friend who does facials comes every couple of months and will use the machines on me.
Spotlyte: Do you have a dermatologist in LA?
MK: No. Actually, I need a good one because I need to check on my mole.
Spotlyte: What’s your fitness routine like these days?
MK: I really need to start working out again. My husband and I used to do yoga every weekend and we loved it. We stopped for a little while because I had the baby and I needed to just do nothing, but now I'm ready to get back into the swing of things.
We do love to go for walks as a family together. We have a double stroller, so we are able to take the two little ones, and Flynn enjoys it too. I’m excited to get back into my regular Pilates and yoga routine.
Spotlyte: You enjoy cooking as well. What do you typically make?
MK: My kids like Medical Medium® muffins. It's a mix to make blueberry bread, but we make them into muffins instead, and they're delicious. It's gluten-free and sugar-free. I also like to make a slow roast chicken with vegetables, and we have been loving zucchini soup. I'm loving steamed potatoes a lot at the moment.
Spotlyte: Speaking of family, what beauty and grooming tips do you share with your husband Evan?
MK: My husband was never really into skincare, but he's had dry skin his whole life. When I met him, I said, “Try the Noni glow face oil.” He tried it, and his skin is so amazing now. He uses the scrub every morning when he showers. I heard him talking to his friends saying, “You have to try the sleep mask.” [To me], he pretends he doesn't like it, but I was like, “I caught you talking about the face mask!”
Spotlyte: Evan is an entrepreneur, too. What's the best career advice he’s offered you?
MK: It was about three years ago, when I was in discussions with Sephora® about launching there. I started the company in Australia 10 years ago, and it was my passion project. To actually launch internationally like we did was a big step, because it was an investment from myself, both financially and time-wise. My husband said to me, “Look, Miranda, if you don't do it now, you will never know. This is an amazing opportunity. You spend so much time building and promoting other brands. Why don't you focus that energy on building your own brand so that everyone else can try it?” That's when I really took the major leap of faith. Now we're in 25 different countries.
Spotlyte: Do you have any advice for people who are looking to get into the beauty industry?
MK: It’s important to follow your own intuition, but it's also important to realize that it takes a lot of time and money. It doesn't happen overnight. If you’re going to create your own company, you really need to make sure that it is what you want to do.
Spotlyte: What’s the most exciting thing about having a beauty brand?
MK: Growing my company every day is exciting to me. It's exciting for me to be the leader in organic skincare. I haven't taken a cent out of the company, because I keep putting the money that I'm making back into the company. That shows how passionate I am about the products and getting them out there. My goal is that it will be a household name that people rely on and trust for healthy, incredible organic skincare.
