Given the increase of ceramide-spiked skincare, one might assume ceramides are flash-in-the-pan trendy. In actuality, though, ceramides have been around forever — in your skin, nonetheless! Comprised of fatty acids, ceramides are lipids that make up approximately half of the skin barrier. If you were to think of the skin barrier as a brick wall, ceramides are an essential component of the “glue” that holds our skin cell “bricks” together, NYC-based board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, previously told Spotlyte. Unfortunately, our skin naturally loses ceramides as we age — and, as those essential “glue” components deplete, so does our skin’s ability to retain moisture. One way to re-up your supply: use moisturizers with ceramides. In doing so, you’re supplementing an ingredient that is crucial for a healthy skin barrier — and thus, paving your way to softer, younger-looking skin.
Below, seven moisturizers with ceramides — from a soothing night cream spiked with the fatty acids and lavender to a cooling barrier-protecting cream that absorbs in record time.
Sunday Riley® ICETM Ceramide Moisturizing Cream
This rich, ceramide-centric cream is ideal for long flights, high altitudes, and any other scenario that typically incites dryness. A scrumptious-sounding blend of coconut and pomegranate soften and protect with fatty acids and antioxidants, respectively. Ceramides, as well as ceramide collaborators linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, replenish lost lipids. The result: skin as smooth as, well, ice.
Pixi® Rose Ceramide Cream
What’s one way to render skin as soft as a rose petal? Slather it with this rosy-scented formula. In addition to skin-softening rose oil and ceramides, this dense cream contains vitamin E-rich shea butter, as well as moisture-loving glycerin. A little bit goes a long way; as for the scent, it’s positively posey-forward without overwhelming the senses.
IT Cosmetics® Confidence In Your Beauty SleepTM Night Cream
Fans of the original Confidence in a Cream® (including our senior beauty editor) will love this nighttime rendition. Like the original, the formula is luxuriously creamy and instantly softening. Ceramides linger with hyaluronic acid and adenosine (part of a compound that promotes cell energy) for skin that’s softer come morning — and firmer with continued nightly use. Bonus points for its lavender scent; a welcome addition to any winddown skincare routine.
H2o+® Hydration OasisTM Refreshing Gel Moisturizer
If you want to support your skin barrier without creating what feels like a greasy, physical barrier of product, consider this ultra lightweight, gel-based formula. In addition to ceramides, it’s spiked with hydrating hyaluronic acid and soothing chamomile extract. True to its name, it’s excellent for sensitive skin.
CeraVe® Daily Moisturizing Lotion
We’d be remiss not to mention CeraVe, the brand that’s made ceramides an indispensable component of every last one of its products. We’re partial to one of the original CeraVe products — the Daily Moisturizing Lotion, which can be used on face and body. It’s been around forever, but its lightweight, fragrance-free formula withstands the test of time.
Drunk Elephant® Lala Retro® Whipped Cream With Ceramides
This fragrance-free moisturizer has become a mainstay for many skincare buffs, thanks in part to its rich texture, ultra-clean ingredients, and general lack of fuss. What it does offer: glow-boosting fatty acids, antioxidant-rich green tea, and a whole lot of plant-based ceramides. We love the airless pump, which deposits just the right amount of product with a single press.
Dr. Jart+® Ceramidin® Cream
This packed formula is about as thick as they come; a pea-sized amount is all you need for a full face worth of hydration. Amazingly, despite the formula’s richness, it doesn’t feel greasy; instead, it leaves skin touchably soft. The cream contains five different types of ceramides — ideal for repairing weather-worn skin barriers. Other key benefits: it’s fragrance- and irritant-free, making it a favorite among ultra-sensitive and eczema-prone skin types.
