Do you smell that? No, it’s not one of the new fragrances or candles we’re loving this month...it’s the slow arrival of fall. Though many of us have felt like we’ve been living in a state of arrested development since March, time marches on, skin concerns evolve — and new beauty products launch to help us thrive through it all. This month, our editors face maskne head-on with chemical exfoliants, push away puffiness with crystal facial rollers, and sallow skin with vitamin C scrubs. Read on to discover their new favorites — and hopefully, a few of yours, too.
Kim Kimble® Hybrid Quick Dryer
Who: Joslyn Winkfield, Creative Lead, Digital
Why: With summer coming to an end, I can look forward to the promise of fall’s lower humidity levels. For me, this means I can start experimenting with more blown-out and straight styles that won’t puff up immediately. I’ve had the same hair dryer for at least 10 years, so not only has it seen better days, it’s also missing all its attachments. Needless to say, this beautiful rose gold dryer by celebrity stylist Kim Kimble (you’ve heard of her clients — Beyoncé, anyone?) is a much-needed upgrade. It comes with several concentrators, which are great for stretching my curly roots, and a diffuser to speed up dry time so I can style and be on my merry way.
Harlem Candle® Company Savoy Luxury Candle
Why: With all that’s been happening this year, it’s become a more passionate goal of mine to support small businesses and black-owned companies on a regular basis. What better way to do that than treating myself to a luxurious, intoxicating candle every month? For September, I was drawn to the Savoy scent by Harlem Candle Company. I lived in Harlem for many years, and when I walk down some of the historic streets, I picture what it must have been like during the Harlem Renaissance. The heady scent of blackcurrant, bright fruits like mandarin, green apple and pear combined with floral notes of lily and jasmine are topped off with a light musk and sandalwood. One whiff and I’m transported from my bedroom or bathtub to the iconic Savoy Ballroom on Lenox Avenue.
Gilded THE BODY KIT
Why: I’ll admit it — as a visuals editor, sometimes I’m drawn to a product simply because of its aesthetic. If it looks pretty, I’m not as concerned about its results or functionality. But, in the case of this exfoliating body kit from Gilded, I’m getting both. Let’s start with the body brush: It’s marble. Enough said, honestly — I can’t think of a more luxurious way to pamper my skin than to dry brush myself from head to toe with something made from marble and natural fibers. To take it up a notch, I use the entire Body Kit, which comes with a brightening body polish that buffs skin with yummy ingredients like Himalayan pink salt, vitamin E, and lychee extract, and a nourishing body balm chock full of butters like shea and cupuaçu.
Herbivore® Maskne Routine Bundle
Why: A “fun” new term that’s been added to our vocabulary this year is “maskne” — acne created by constantly having to cover half our face with masks or coverings — which protect our health in many ways, but can wreak havoc on our skin. I’ve definitely noticed bumps on my chin and jawline that I rarely used to see. Any help I can get to combat clogged pores, and dry, irritated skin from fabric friction is greatly appreciated, and bundles that are already laid out with everything I need makes life just a tiny bit easier. This kit from Herbivore includes some of my skin-balancing favorites, like the Lapis Blue Tansy + Squalane Face Oil, and a full sized bottle of their new Pink Cloud Rosewater + Tremella Creamy Jelly Cleanser — which whisks away dirt, oil, and my mask-smudged makeup while leaving my skin feeling super hydrated.
Bliss® Clear Genius Clarifying Toner + Serum
Who: Emily Orofino, Senior Beauty Editor
Why: I, too, have been suffering from a light bout of maskne, which seems to be resistant to most of the tricks in my skincare arsenal. Light chemical peels and other exfoliating treatments can’t destroy it, while benzoyl peroxide right on the blemishes makes my skin flake. Enter Bliss’s new toner/serum hybrid, which is gentle enough to use twice daily every day, but is strong enough to keep my face covering-induced blemishes at bay. The formula is loaded with pore-purging salicylic acid, soothing cica, and niacinamide to help fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and improve the appearance of pores. I’ve been using it daily since I started trying it a week or so ago, and it’s helped my skin be the calmest it’s been in weeks.
Although salicylic acid is considered safe to use while nursing, be sure to avoid applying it to areas on your body that baby may come into direct contact with or inadvertently ingest it
eos evolution of smooth® The Hero Lip Repair Extra Dry Lip Treatment
Why: While lip balm addiction technically isn’t a thing, I’m still hopelessly devoted to ritualistically applying something to my lips multiple times a day. My latest balm of choice is this new formula from eos, part of the brand’s just-launched Ultra Care Collection. If you’ve used eos balms in the past, you know that they’re fun, smell great, and work well, but might not be rich enough if you’re dealing with an ultra-parched pucker. The Hero was launched for precisely that reason! The buttery balm was formulated with a proprietary SuperShieldTM Shea complex to help protect, nourish, and seal in deep moisture, plus natural strawberry extract for a hint of sweet flavor and scent. I’m keeping it on me at all times so my lips have 24/7 access to a hit of hydration.
SkinCeuticals® Tri-Peptide Neck Repair
Why: We have an article called “Don’t Neglect Your Neck” — and yet that’s precisely what I’ve been doing for the last 31 years of my life. That’s because my primary concern for the future of my neck is laxity, and I’ve never seen any neck products’ clinical studies that treated much beyond dehydration. (Call me fussy, but I want proof something works before I commit to weeks of slathering it on!) However, this new launch from SkinCeuticals — which is powered by a blend of firming peptides and glaucine, plus anti-aging retinol — has the evidence to support their powerful claims. In a 16-week clinical study, the brand found that the formula delivered 28% improvement in tactile smoothness and 13% improvement in lifting. Trust me when I say that I was wowed by the visual results of the study — it inspired me to put this formula on every night!
Retinol shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant, considering getting pregnant, or nursing. Please consult with your doctor before use.
L’Occitane® Immortelle® Precious Overnight Mask
Who: Thia Laurain, Senior Social Media Editor
Why: As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, my perpetually dry skin somehow manages to get even drier than it was during spring and summer. (Read: it’s very dry.) Once that crisp autumn air hits, I turn to two things I know I can count on to keep my complexion from drying out like an auburn maple leaf: hyaluronic acid and sleeping masks. This new Immortelle Precious Overnight Mask from L’Occitane combines my two loves into one, infusing ultra-hydrating HA into a fast-absorbing overnight mask. The silky, surprisingly lightweight cream contains two skin-fortifying forms of the line’s signature immortelle flower — essential oil and Super Aqueous Extract — along with a low-molecular-weight form of hyaluronic acid that sinks deeply into parched skin. So far, I’ve only used this at night, but the heavenly scent and 8+ hour hydration have me wanting to slather it on in the A.M., too… and knowing it holds this kind of reliable, skin-plumping power, I just might. (Topped with SPF, of course!)
Floral Street® Arizona Bloom Perfume
Why: While so much has been uncertain these last few months, one simple morning ritual has given me a sense of normalcy every day: spritzing on perfume. It makes me feel awake, put-together, and ready to take on the day (even if my frizzy hair and sleepy eyes suggest otherwise). As part of my quest to include more clean beauty products in my everyday routine, lately I’ve been loving the scents from the vegan, sustainably-sourced, England-imported line Floral Street.
My current everyday spritz is the latest addition to their affordable line, Arizona Bloom. This warm, not-too-sweet eau de parfum is a light and easy blend of amber and creamy Balinese coconut grounded in oak moss and black pepper, with the second-skin scent of salted musk rounding out the base. As the name suggests, the scent was inspired by dry heat, sun-drenched flora, and a nomadic desire to run wild and free. Whether you’re actually romping around the high desert (lucky you!), or still sheltering-in-place in a cramped city apartment (hi, it’s me), one spritz of this dreamy, bohemian scent will mentally transport you to a place where golden hour is every hour.
Farmacy® Honey HaloTM Ultra-Hydrating Ceramide Moisturizer
Why: This thick, ceramide-rich moisturizer is Farmacy’s newest addition to their best-selling honey-infused skincare line, and when it comes to long-lasting hydration, boy, does it deliver. The buttery formula has the texture and color of fresh clotted cream, with the light, sweet scent of buckwheat honey straight from the brand’s certified-organic, regenerative farm in Hudson, NY. With a veritable bouquet of botanical superstars like moisture-binding fig extract, skin-strengthening plant-based ceramides, and moisture-sealing shea butter, this intense, nourishing moisturizer is a plant-packed powerhouse. Needless to say, this new formula will be making my skin’s often difficult transition from summer to fall (and winter, too) that much easier and cleaner, too! Now that’s something to buzz about.
Dr.Jart+® Body Ceramidin® Body Lotion
Why: I’m a longtime fan of the Dr. Jart Ceramidin range. As a lifelong-haver of mostly-seasonal-but-really-anytime eczema, this soothing skincare line has been a trusted friend through many an eczema flare-up. Now, lucky for me, the best-selling, ceramide-infused formula is finally making its debut in the brand’s first ever body product, Ceramidin Body Lotion. With a creamy, yet fast-absorbing texture, light, fresh scent, and bevvy of beneficial ingredients, I have a feeling this nourishing body lotion is going to become a skin-saving staple of mine as the months get colder (and colder and colder). Snap up your own oversized tube at Sephora — and add one of my all-time favorites, Ceramidin Liquid or Cream — to your virtual cart while you’re at it, to stay ultra-hydrated from head-to-toe.
Summer Fridays® Soft ResetTM AHA Exfoliating Solution
Why: The latest launch from Summer Fridays is both easy on the eyes and skin, thanks to a multi-AHA blend of glycolic and lactic acids tempered by skin-soothing aloe and hydrating hyaluronic acid. While it’s not surprising that the solution has very little scent, the viscous, almost tactile quality of the lightweight liquid is. Like the name suggests, the formula feels soft on the skin, and absorbs quickly — leaving only pleasant little tingles in its wake. (And brighter, smoother skin in the morning!) And like all other photogenic products from the Instagram®-famous line, the baby blue frosted-glass vessel is totally vanity-worthy.
Knesko® White Jade Face Roller
Why: I often wake up with puffy eyes, but the sweltering heat of this past summer made my morning predicament even more dramatic than usual. Thankfully, I picked up one of Knesko’s gorgeous white jade face rollers halfway through the season, and have used it every morning since then to soothe and de-puff my swollen, tender skin. Previously only available as part of a set with one of their signature reiki-charged sheet masks, the four precious gemstone-crowned rollers — green jade, white jade, rose quartz, and obsidian — are now finally available for individual purchase. The price of this luxe face roller makes it a bit of a splurge, but the quality of the materials (Fair-trade white jade! Rose gold!) and construction (Jewelry-quality bevels! Heft!) means it will be the only face roller you’ll ever need. I keep mine in the refrigerator, so it’s ready to cool and calm my skin 24/7, and highly recommend doing the same. Bonus: The dual-ended design means that the jade stays cooler for longer, so you can truly roll those puffy eyes goodbye in one fell swoop.
If you take blood thinners, talk to your doctor before using a gua sha or rolling tool.
Peter Thomas Roth® Potent-C® Power Scrub
Who: Madisen Theobald, Senior Social Media Editor
Why: During quarantine, I have been missing my monthly facials at Glowbar® in New York City, so I have had to seek other worthy exfoliating treatment options for my combo skin. This month, I tried the Peter Thomas Roth Potent-C Power Scrub, and now I religiously use it about once a week. I am addicted to the texture: The formula is filled with orange vitamin C beads for brightening, black jojoba spheres and white aluminum oxide for exfoliating and refining the appearance of my uneven texture, and lastly, gold jojoba beads and white cocoa butter beads that nourish and condition my skin. This invigorating scrub is like the Clean and Clear® Morning Burst® Scrub that you used in high school, but packed with way more benefits for mature skin. I absolutely love how soft and even in texture my skin feels immediately after massaging the scrub into my skin for about 30 seconds. It is my new go-to facial exfoliator.
Kitsch® x Justine Marjan Cherub Angel 5pc Set
Why: Every time Kitsch and Justine Marjan (trusted celebrity hairstylist and sweet friend of mine) drop a new hair accessories collection I have to get my hands on them (and my tresses adorned with them). Earlier this month, Marjan launched her fourth collaboration with Kitsch featuring a ton of ‘90s chic bobby pins, drawstring chiffon scrunchies, and girly ruched headbands. The collection is full of pale pink frills, blingy rhinestones, and gorgeous gold-detailing. My favorite pieces from this collection are the mini angel bobby pins. I love to style and stack all three of the mini cherubs on one side of my middle part. These shiny, heavy-duty bobby pins can dress up any fall look — from basics to evening wear.
ElaluzTM Lip & Cheek Stain
Who: Priscilla De Castro, Visuals Editor
Why: The new brand Elaluz (Portuguese for "she is light") was founded by Brazilian beauty vlogger Camila Coelho, and I’m thrilled to share that she’s created the perfect two-in-one formula. It’s a dual-purpose product for both lips and cheeks, and only comes in one shade, a universal red. I was initially hesitant, because of how bright the shade is — but it goes on lighter than it looks, and it compliments my skin beautifully. The formula actually feels soft, and the longwear formula fades evenly, rather than in patches. During the day, I primarily use it on my lips for a put-together look. I still consider myself a novice when applying blush, but feel comfortable using a finger to blend it out a little on my cheeks for the perfect “no makeup” flushed look. I can also go run errands during the day and build it up more for a date night look.
Verb® Ghost Weightless Hair Oil
Who: Priscilla De Castro, Visuals Editor
Why: Early this summer, I experienced “shock hair loss.” This term was coined to address stress-related hair loss (and in many cases, including mine, that shock was due to the COVID-19 pandemic). After seeing and being treated by a dermatologist, I am finally seeing hair growth — which has been very exciting, but also has resulted in a lot of flyaways. I know hair serums and oils are the solve, but I was reluctant to try a new one, since I have tried countless formulas that have left my hair looking flat and greasy.
Enter Verb Ghost: I use about a pump and half on my wet hair, focusing most of the product from the midlength of my hair to the ends, and gently pat the remainder of what’s on my fingertips at the top. Once my hair air dries, this product makes my hair look healthy and shiny, without the weight or greasy feel — and my flyaways have finally been tamed! On the rare occasion that I do curl my hair, this serum is the perfect finishing touch. My curls are able to still hold their shape, with the added bonus of luxurious shine. This hair oil lives up to its name.
Brujita Skincare Chamomile Hydrosol
Who: Priscilla De Castro, Visuals Editor
Why: Growing up, if I ever had a fever, stomachache, cramp, or sleepless night, my Peruvian mom’s answer always — and still is — chamomile tea. I’d just never thought about using it as part of my skincare routine! Now as an adult, I get to use Brujita, a Latina-owned and -operated brand, that harnesses the strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of chamomile. I go most days without makeup, so I love using this spray to freshen and soothe up my face and neck throughout the day. The calming properties of chamomile appear to make my skin more balanced and the familiar scent definitely lifts my spirits.
Who: Sophie Wirt, Beauty Editor
Why: Not quite conditioner, not quite hair mask, this leave-in treatment functions as both — and so much more. Two pumps on towel-dried hair leaves my otherwise rough, thirsty, strands chinchilla-soft without any heaviness. This weightless softness is thanks to a keratin-mimicking ingredient that can literally heal damaged hair. Initially, I’d written this off as marketing jargon, but upon looking into the science, I realized it actually makes sense. Basically, bleaching breaks hair’s amino acid bonds, rendering it rough and lacklustre. This stuff absorbs into the hair shaft (instead of simply sitting on top) and “glues” those bonds back together. As a result, hair is literally healthier — which explains why mine feels better every time I use this stuff. For all of these reasons, I am recommending it to all of my bleached-hair buddies.
Fenty SkinTM HYDRA Vizor
Why: As a (self-appointed) Sunscreen Queen, I’m particular with which formulas I appoint to my medicine cabinet. Fenty has never disappointed in the makeup category, but skincare is a completely different ball game. Nevertheless, this sunscreen proved to be a grand slam: it’s lightweight, transparent, and formula imparts a dewiness that comes from hydration, not greasiness. Initially, the formula has a rosy tint and a slightly sweet smell; both of these factors enhance the application experience, but dissipate within seconds of rubbing. Lastly, I’d be remiss not to mention the packaging. It’s chic in an almost futuristic way, and the refillable canister makes it forward-thinking in more ways than one.
